History of Tredegar Iron Works and the Civil War Center
Tredegar Iron works first opened in the year 1836 and was owned by Francis Deane. In the year 1847 Joseph Anderson took over the iron works. Tredegar Iron Works were famous for manufacturing steel and metal necessities for the area. The company produced things such as train wheels, cannon materials, naval ship materials, and a few brass objects. During the Civil War the Iron Works were famous for helping construct the Merrimack's armor. Because it was one of the only iron producing factories, the Iron Works area was an important area for the confederate army to protect during the Civil War. During World War I, the Korean War, and World War II, the Iron Works helped manufacture iron items for the area. In the year 1955 a fire destroyed some of the building, causing it to move locations across the James River. The original area of the Iron Works was restored and turned into a Civil War center in the year 2006. The Civil War center now has some original artifacts from the building and is a great way to remember the Civil War.
