Pre-Trip Activity
Before the students attend the field trip, I will introduce the students to some basic knowledge of the Civil War. The day before the trip the students will be given a "KWL" (What we Know, What we want to know, and What we learned) chart. The students will fill out the K and W portion of the chart the day before the field trip. The students should write things such as facts about the civil war and what they want to know. After spending about 10 -15 minutes filling out the chart independently we will complete a KWL chart on our Smart Board as a class. I will have students come up to the board and write one thing from the chart on the board. We will save both of the class and the independent KWL charts to complete them after our trip.
During-Trip Activity
The students will have a short activity to complete during their field trip, but luckily it is hands-on! We will be participating in the Mr. Pinkerton's Artifact Investigation activity. Once the class completes the tour of the museum, the tour guide will have the students spilt up into groups and give each group a trunk filled with artifacts from the civil war. The artifacts in the trunk describe a slave women, a Confederate solider, a northern worker, and a Tredegar Iron worker. The students will also be given a worksheet and a clipboard. The students must answer the questions by looking through trunk and using the artifacts to figure out their person and their persons job. The group will present their findings to the class before ending the field trip.
*The artifacts in the trunk are reproduced *
**The trunk activity is part of the museum's tour that we are taking, they provide the trunk and the worksheet. I was not able to get pictures of the trunk because they were not out for use the day that I went to the museum.**

Post-Trip Activity
After returning from the field trip the class will partake in a post-trip activity. The students will first finish the "L" portion of the KWL chart that they completed the day before. They will be required to write at least five facts down that they learned from the field trip. Once they complete that independently, we will complete the class KWL chart on the smart board.
Along with the KWL chart the students will have to complete a journal homework assignment about the field trip. The students will be assigned to write a journal entry about their experiences on the field trip. The students will choose from one of the people that the trunk activity described, and will write about what their life would have been like during the Civil War. The student will be required to include at least 4 facts from the civil war museum that they learned during the trip. The students journal entry will be turned in and we will share a few of them with the class the next morning.
