Why Should We Go on this trip?
This field trip will enhance the students knowledge of the Civil War and it's major events during the time period. After this trip the students will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the cause of the Civil War, the major battles, notable people during the war, along with some reconstruction facts. The museum allows the students to get a hands on experience outside of the classroom and supports the Virginia SOL standards.
The trip addresses the following Virginia SOL's;
-VS.7: The student will demonstrate knowledge of the issues that divided our nation and led to the Civil War by
a) identifying the events and differences between northern and southern states that divided Virginians and
led secession, war, and the creation of West Virginia;
b) describing Virginia’s role in the war, including identifying major battles that took place in Virginia;
c) describing the roles played by whites, enslaved African Americans, free African Americans, and American Indians.
